Naked moon represents a giant leap in the career of Shin Yamazawa. We know that innovation is difficult, and more so in a subject matter such as nudes, where art seems to have tested out all possible experiments.
But the Japanese photographer has achieved different forms of expression in what is perhaps his most personal series. The weight of the pictorial, with allusions to the work of Rembrandt and sometimes to that of Rubens, and the sculptural treatment of the images, puts itself in the service of the gentleness of the female body, but also of its strength and its violence. The result is a splendid demonstration of plastic beauty that is in no way conventional.
